Unemployment drops in Catalonia in September, while Spain registers 20,000 new jobseekers

Unemployment in Catalonia dropped in September, with 3,340 fewer jobseekers (1%) than the previous month, according to figures made public by Spain's labor ministry this Tuesday. At the same time, Spain registered 19,768 new jobless claims.

Compared to September 2022, there are 18,800 fewer unemployed people in Catalonia (-5.3%), while the number of jobseekers listed was 335,432, the lowest point for the month of September since 2007, when 259,179 were registered. 

The last days of the summer holidays and the start of the academic year pushed the employment number to a record high for the month of September, with 3.7 million workers in all. This is the fourth-highest figure ever registered after May, June, and July of this year.

In Spain, there were over 500,000 new workers in September, totaling in 20.72 million people, but there were still 2.72 million jobseekers after the 0.7% employment increase in August. Compared to September of last year, the figures are 7.5% lower.
