Dozens of Catalan companies are taking part in the Mobile World Congress, with a big part of them within the Catalonia pavilion. This space is run by both the secretary of Telecommunications and a government-funded agency, called Catalonia Trade & Investment (or ‘Acció’ in Catalan). With a network of around 40 offices spread around the globe, the main goal of this agency is to promote Catalan companies worldwide, especially within the innovation sector. That’s why Catalonia Trade & Investment, once more, involved in the Mobile World Congress. Catalan News has interviewed its innovation manager, Carles Gómara, about this event, and about the wireless industry in the country and its reputation abroad.
Hello, Carles Gómara, thank you very much for being with us. So, to start with, what is the representation like, here, this year, at the Mobile World Congress, of Catalan companies in the sector?
Well, we're very happy because this year, at the Mobile World Congress we have more than one hundred companies. Some of them are in our pavilion - in the Catalonia pavilion - others have their own stand and their own booth, and others are in different stands, from other companies.
"I think we are very well-represented, with very international companies. Well, we have a very important position around the world"
Carles Gómara · innovation manager for Catalonia Trade & Investment
What are your expectations for this year's congress?
Well, really, the expectations are very high. We prepared for the Mobile World Congress several months ago, so we think that we have several leads here in the Mobile World Congress. Companies, Catalan companies, they are really well-prepared for this kind of congress, which would bring us abroad. So, this is the place where they can just have the last meetings, important meetings, in order to close some deals.
And how is the Catalan representation in the wireless sector, at a European level and worldwide?
Well, it's a very interesting question. It's not easy to answer, because, I think when you have the strength of the Catalan ITT sector, there's variety. We have companies that have different solutions in different sectors. In health, in industry, in logistics, in automotive and the vehicles of the future. So, I think we are very well-represented, with very international companies. Well, we have a very important position around the world.
Can you give any examples of some companies from Catalonia that are doing specifically well within the sector, overall?
China is a very tough market - but we have Catalan companies that are there. They are producing, but also selling - it's a big difference. We also have companies in the States, in the USA. So, I think that this will be a very good congress.
