Spanair transported almost 4 million passengers in 2010

While Spanair recorded an 11.6% increase in passengers in 2010, Iberia lost 19.5% passengers and Air Europe 16%. The airline that is partially owned by the Catalan Government offers 59 direct destinations from Barcelona, 13 of which intercontinental.

El Prat de Llobregat (ACN) .- The airline Spanair transported 3,980,408 passengers in 2010 - 11.6% more than in the previous year. According to a press release published by the company, Spanair grew more than any of the other top ten companies operating in El Prat airport. According to research provided by Spanair, Easyjet rose by 6.3% and Vueling 5%. The data also illustrates how other airline companies suffered significant setbacks. Iberia lost 19.5% of its passengers and Air Europe 16%.


The figures released this week show the difference in operations with regard to the month in question. For example, in January, Spanair noted an increase of 41% over the previous January. In February, Spanair operations increased by 34% over previous year and 22% in August. The airline company emphasised months like December and August when occurrences like the volcanic ash cloud Eyjafjallajökull and air controller strikers impeded operations. Other figures that were highlighted by the company were the 75,538 passengers who use El Prat airport as a connection airport - 27% of those transported in December.

In the last two years, Spanair and the companies of Star Alliance grew considerably and they now transport 26.6% of the total amount of passengers that pass through the Catalan airport each year. According to Spanair, SkyTeam transported 12% in 2010 and Oneworld 10.1%. Low cost airlines are responsible for the transportation of 41.2% of the passengers in El Prat airport, Barcelona.

Another noteworthy element is that in 2010 Spanair became the first company to offer more direct destinations from Barcelona-El Prat Airport. They now have 59 direct destinations (18 domestic, 28 international and 13 intercontinental).
