21-Mar-24: 'Carles Puigdemont announces run in Catalan May elections'
Carles Puigdemont, the former president of Catalonia who spearheaded the 2017 independence referendum, has announced that he will run as the Junts frontrunner in the May election. Puigdemont has lived in exile ever since the peak of the independence crisis in the autumn of 2017 and has been an MEP since 2019. He will benefit from the amnesty law, but before that comes into effect, it remains to be seen how he will campaign from abroad.
