13-Mar-24: 'Snap election called in Catalonia after government's budget fails'

Catalonia will go to the polls on May 12th. President Pere Aragonès called a snap election this evening after his 2024 budget was rejected by parliament. Ruling Esquerra tried to save their budget bill up until the last minute, offering the Comuns a spate of housing policies, but the left-wing party refused to budge on their red line issue of the Hard Rock casino hotel complex. In the end, lawmakers rejected the spending plan by a single vote, leading the president to bring elections forward.
