The Spanish Data Protection Agency (AEPD) has opened an investigation into American company OpenAI, owner of the AI chatbot service ChatGPT, for possible non-compliance with data protection regulations.

Last week, the AEPD requested the European Data Protection Committee (EDPB) to include this as a subject to be addressed, considering that such a service that may have a significant impact on people's data protection rights require "coordinated" actions at the European level.

In a meeting on Thursday, the EDPB decided to launch a working group to encourage cooperation and exchange information on actions taken by data protection authorities.

In a statement, the AEPD points out that it "advocates for the development and implementation of innovative technologies" such as artificial intelligence "with full respect for current legislation."

The entity considers that "only from this starting point" can a technological development "compatible with people's rights and freedoms" flourish.
