Global bank Revolut is launching its first-ever ATMs anywhere in the world in Barcelona, coinciding with the city's largest music festival, Primavera Sound.

The bank will first deploy 50 ATMs between the Catalan capital and Madrid from Monday, after temporary placement at Primavera Sound, and quickly start adding more to reach 200 ATMs in Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia, and Malaga.

Spain will be the first market to test the next step for the "cashless organization," which is well aware that "cash is still important," as Antonie le Nel, chief growth and marketing officer at Revolut, told the press at their Barcelona TecHub facilities.

ATMs will also allow non-registered users to obtain a Revolut debit card on the spot and withdraw money using any other bank card for a fee. Registered users will not have to pay any commission to use the machines.

Barcelona has also been selected to test the product, as "the city being a tourist destination, it is important for Revolut customers to feel at home" when they start using the bank's ATMs, Le Nel added.

Customers withdrawing in a different currency from their home balance (e.g. GBP card withdrawing euros in Spain) will benefit from the same exchange rates they’re used to in the app, using Revolut’s exchange rates. In a market where foreign ATM withdrawals often "come with high charges and poor conversion rates, Revolut’s ATMs give travelers a smarter, fairer way to access their money globally," a statement reads.

The ATM project has been fully developed and designed in the city's offices, which employ around 300 people. ATMs are visible in-app via a real-time ATM locator, including directions and opening hours.

"We do not have a physical presence and we want to bring Revolut to our customers," Le Nel said, as it improves "trust and the feeling of proximity."

Aside from developing and testing the product in Barcelona, Le Nel explained that one out of ten Spaniards own a Revolut account, and people in Spain still use cash. The country is also the bank's second biggest market in continental Europe, with almost five million users, just below France, with over five million users. Their biggest market worldwide is the United Kingdom, with more than 11 million registered users.

ATMs will be deployed across the city from Monday until September, with three to five new machines added weekly. By the end of the year, the company will start extending its physical presence to reach 200 nationwide in 2026.

There will be two fee-free ATM designs for Revolut users, one named 'In Lobby' and the other 'Through the Wall.' The first type will be indoors, while the second will be in "very central areas with a lot of people passing by, because as more people see the ATM, more people will use it," Revolut sources told journalists.

Despite not announcing investment figures, it has been "an important project to develop the product in Barcelona completely." Sources added that "many Spaniards are leading different projects at Revolut, but the main project of the Barcelona TecHub has been working on ATMs."
