Leo Messi acquires 5th tier Catalan club UE Cornellà
Former Barça star's arrival "aimed at driving both sporting and institutional growth," club say

Lionel Messi is back in Catalan football, having acquired Tercera Federació club UE Cornellà.
The 5th tier club are currently third in their league, five points off top, but in a playoff position, with the possibility of achieving promotion.
A club statement from UE Cornellà on Thursday explained that move reinforces the Inter Miami player's close ties to the area and his commitment to the development of sport and local talent in Catalonia.
"Leo Messi’s arrival marks the beginning of a new chapter in the club’s history, aimed at driving both sporting and institutional growth, strengthening its foundations, and continuing to invest in talent. The project is guided by a long-term vision and a strategic plan that combines ambition, sustainability, and a strong connection to its local roots."
UE Cornellà has a distinguished record in bringing through players that have gone on to play at the highest level of the game, including David Raya, Jordi Alba, Gerard Martín, Javi Puado, Aitor Ruibal, and plenty more. These players "reflect the strength and success of the club’s development model," UE Cornellà's statement points out.
"Messi’s commitment to young talent is also reflected in the club’s strong youth structure, with teams competing in the top youth categories at both national and regional levels," the statement continues.
Curiously, UE Cornellà's home stadium is located practically in the same grounds as RCD Espanyol's stadium, with stands separated by ten metres.
