Espanyol secure La Liga survival with win over Las Palmas on last day of season
Catalan club will play in top division next season after 2-0 victory at RCDE Stadium

RCD Espanyol secured their survival in the top division of Spanish football on the final day of the season with a 2-0 victory at home to Las Palmas on Saturday.
Going into the match on the back of five defeats – including one which saw city rivals FC Barcelona win the league title – Espanyol needed at least a draw to confirm their status as a La Liga team for the 2025-26 season.
A penalty from Javi Puado on 64 minutes eased nerves at the RCDE Stadium, and the party really got underway when Pere Milla scored to make it 2-0 with less than 10 minutes to go.
The final whistle was greeted with wild celebrations and a pitch invasion from fans who have now faced relegation, promotion and last-minute survival in the last three seasons.
The three points earned on Saturday night mean Espanyol end the season on 42, two ahead of Leganes who will be playing second division football next year despite defeating bottom club Valladolid 3-0 in their final game.
Espanyol will hope to take the bragging rights as the second-best team in Catalonia – behind champions Barça – with all eyes on Atlético Madrid's trip to Girona on Sunday.
