Barcelona’s coastline will once again be filled with historical and elegant classic yachts as the 18th edition of the Puig Vela Clàssica regatta returns from Wednesday to Saturday.

This event brings together some of the world’s most beautiful vessels from the 19th and 20th centuries. Held annually, it has become one of the "most important sailing events" in the Mediterranean.

"This regatta is a living expression of our maritime identity and strengthens us as a city of the sea," said the mayor of Barcelona, Jaume Collboni, during a press conference on Monday.

Last year, the regatta adjusted its schedule to coincide with the America’s Cup, the world’s oldest international sailing competition. This year, the event returns to its regular format, welcoming over 40 vessels from across the world competing in four categories based on their design, age, and size.

The categories include vintage boats, made from wood or metal and launched before 1949. Classic boats built according to their original plan and launched between 1950 and 1975. Modern classics, vessels with traditional designs but modern construction, using the latest materials. Big boats, including vintage and classic boats longer than 23 meters.

The race routes are designed to bring the boats as close to shore as possible, allowing both locals and visitors to enjoy the spectacle from the beaches and boardwalks of La Barceloneta, Port Olímpic, and Port Vell.

The regatta, organized by the Real Club Náutico de Barcelona and Catalan perfume brand Puig, will conclude with a final celebration and awards ceremony on Saturday.

Over the years, the event has hosted famous yachts such as 'Moonbeam III,' which carried Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier of Monaco on their honeymoon; the 'Mariette,' a century-old sailing gem; the 'Islander,' which holds the record for the longest solo Atlantic crossing; and the 'Manitou,' famously used by John F. Kennedy during his presidency.
