City councilor backs Montjuïc as Formula E circuit
PP head believes electric car category is great opportunity to return racing competition to Montjuïc mountain

For years, Montjuïc mountain hosted Formula 1 Grands Prix, long before the Circuit de Catalunya was built in Montmelò.
Now, a Barcelona city councilor is backing for Montjuïc to once again host major international motor races.
Daniel Sirera, of the conservative People's Party, has urged mayor Jaume Collboni to push for Montjuïc to be the host track for a new Formula E race.

Sirera wants the electric car race to arrive in Catalonia for 2027, as organizers are looking at destinations now for that cycle of Grands Prix.
"Barcelona has the opportunity to host a Formula E race: technology, sustainability, and spectacle on wheels," Sirera wrote on social media. "[Mayor] Collboni must make a move and invest in Montjuïc, a historic circuit that deserves to buzz again."
Currently, there are no Formula E races held in Spain. The only time a race of the electric category was held in the country was in the rescheduled competitions in 2021, when a race was brought to Xest, in the Valencian region, when authorities sought alternative tracks located far from populated areas, as the world was still in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Montjuïc Formula 1 track
The Montjuïc circuit hosted many high-profile races almost a century ago.
From 1933-1936, the magic mountain was the venue for the Penya Rhin Grand Prix, a motor racing competition equivalent to what would be the current Formula 1.

Montjuïc was the home of the Spanish Grand Prix in 1969, 1971, 1973, and 1975, but has as not hosted single-seater race for 50 years since that last event.
The mountain track was also the host of the Spanish motorcycle Grand Prix in various years through the 20th century, from 1951–1955, 1961–1968, 1970, 1972, 1974, and 1976.
More recently, it was also the site of the finish of the second stage of the Vuelta a España cycling race in 2023.
