Catalan driver Àlex Palou made history on Sunday night as the first Spaniard to win the Indianapolis 500 race.

The 27-year-old driver earned the first oval victory of his career after winning three times in the NTT IndyCar Series. He has also won five of the six races this season.

"Best milk I have ever tasted," Palau said on the victory podium after drinking from the traditional winner's milk bottle, a statement from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway reports.

“It tastes so good. What an amazing feeling," he added.

Born in Sant Antoni de Vilamajor, just 20 minutes from Barcelona, he started karting when he was six years old, and made his debut in free practice with McLaren at the 2022 United States Formula 1 Grand Prix.

Without an Indy 500 win, Palou said his career resume would never be complete.

With the win, Palou will have a bust of his head added to the Borg-Warner Trophy, etching his face into immortality in one of the most storied and historic motor races on the planet.
