Argentina are world champions for the third time.

Leo Messi, former FC Barcelona captain and all-time top scorer, has led his national team to the world title after a nail-biting final against France.

Argentina overcame the previous reigning champions France 4-2 on penalties following a thrilling match that finished 3-3 after 120 minutes.

As well as the World Cup title, Messi also took home the Golden Ball award for best player of the tournament. The ex Barça forward scored two goals in the final, his team's first and third.

Thousands of Argentina fans flocked to the area of Arc de Triomf in Barcelona to celebrate the dramatic win with drums, chants, and flares.

According to data from the city council, there were almost 10,000 Argentinians living in Barcelona by 2021.
