Water restrictions were introduced in another 129 Catalan municipalities on Friday due to the ongoing drought, bringing the total number of affected cities and towns to 279.

Some 683,000 people – 9% of Catalonia's population – live in these municipalities.

The 129 municipalities in the Empordà, Banyoles, Serralada Transversal and Prades Llaberia water units join those in the Carme Capellades, Ter, mid-Llobregat and Anoia-Gaià areas.

This means that the use of water will have to be reduced by 25% for irrigation, 10% for livestock, 5% for industry, and 5% to 30% for recreational purposes.

Inhabitants of the affected areas will only be allowed to use 250 liters of water per day at most.

There are also limits on watering gardens and green areas, filling swimming pools, and cleaning vehicles, among others.

Private individuals are not allowed to clean the street with water, and filling ornamental fountains is prohibited too.
