Trains interrupted as ground caves in at underground works in Montcada

Train traffic has been interrupted on the R2 Nord, R2 and R11 lines since Wednesday afternoon due to the partial collapse of a wall in one of the shafts at the underground works in Montcada i Reixac, on the border with Barcelona.

The incident is affecting the rail section from Montcada to Barcelona's Sant Andreu station.

No injuries were caused by the cave-in, although the hole has dragged a large crane with it, according to sources from rail infrastructure management company Adif.

Technicians from the company travelled to the site to analyze the causes and extent of the collapse and the stability of the ground.

The incident has forced Renfe to adapt its commuter services.

On Thursday morning, the councilor for the Nou Barris district of Barcelona, ​​Xavier Marcé, explained that the collapse could be related to an earth movement caused by groundwater in the area.

"The pillars of the retaining wall would not have held up," he said in an interview with Catalunya Ràdio.

However, he said that Adif will have to explain the causes in detail.

He pointed out that the priority is to monitor the evolution of the area daily to ensure that "there is no potential impact" on nearby homes.
