Torrential rain: 90mm of rainfall causes travel disruptions and leads to rescue of two from swept vehicle

The first phase of the rainstorm on Tuesday has brought torrential downpours, travel disruptions, vehicles being swept away, and the rescue of two people from a car in Gavà.

A peak of 97mm was recorded in Canaletes, in Anoia, with 94mm of those falling in just three hours.

Fire crews responded to 394 incidents by 1pm, including the rescue of a woman and a baby from a vehicle swept away by the water in Gavà. Both are now safe and sound.

Additionally, three schools have closed due to flooding in Piera, Torrelles de Foix, and Vilanova i la Geltrú.

The storm system is now moving north towards Girona.

Looking ahead to the afternoon, it's forecast that the storms will weaken gradually as they move towards Girona, although rainfall could still exceed 40mm in half an hour, with three-hour accumulations reaching 90mm in the northeast.

The 112 emergency line has received over 600 calls by Tuesday afternoon.

Around 100 flights coming in and our of Barcelona Airport were cancelled, out of the 1,100 flights scheduled for Tuesday.

Widespread delays have also occurred due to the storm, forcing air traffic safety regulations.

Earlier in the morning, Civil Protection sent an ES-Alert to mobile phones in Baix Llobregat, Anoia, and Alt Penedès, advising people not to go outdoors for three hours.

"Do not go outside. Do not go to retrieve your car. Do not go down into basements. If the water reaches you, move to higher ground. If you are outdoors, take shelter in a safe place," the message reads.

The Catalan Water Agency issued warnings about the possibility of sudden rises in river and stream levels in Anoia and Alt Penedès.
