Taxi drivers call off Montjuïc protest planned for Tuesday coinciding with Barça-Olympiacos game
Élite Taxi union planned to demonstrate against Catalan club's new deal with Uber

The spokesperson for Élite Taxi, Tito Álvarez, announced on Tuesday morning that the union has called off their planned demonstration that would have blocked access to Montjuïc this afternoon as FC Barcelona take on Olympiacos in the Champions League.
The protest was planned to voice anger against the agreement between FC Barcelona and the company Uber, but Álvarez explained to Catalunya Ràdio that he met this morning with the general director of the football club and that he had collected all the documentation he had on Uber and Catalan transport laws.
“They will look at everything and make a decision," Álvarez said, adding "they listened to us.”
The spokesperson argued that the decision to call off the mobilization was made “for the love of Barça, to reduce the pressure, and so that they can analyze everything properly.”
The taxi drivers’ platform had called for a protest and a service stoppage between 5-10 pm, coinciding with the match between Barça and Olympiacos.
The intention was to leave from Plaça d’Espanya and Avinguda de Maria Cristina in two columns. The first would reach the club’s offices in the Les Corts district, and the second would head towards the Olympic Stadium.
Álvarez has finally decided to call off the action, but does not rule out calling further protests at a later stage. “We’ll see what happens tomorrow,” he added.
The agreement between Barça and Uber is scheduled to be presented on Wednesday.
Élite Taxi had condemned the club's sponsorship deal, which makes Uber an official partner of FC Barcelona.
They call it an agreement with "criminals" who have built their business on "deregulation, labor exploitation, and tax evasion."
