Tarragona launches clean-up operation after severe storm and hail

Tarragona is gradually returning to normal after a severe storm brought heavy rain, hail and strong winds to the city on Monday evening.

The worst-affected areas included Part Baixa, the Serrallo district, beach areas, La Móra, the Entrevies and Francolí industrial estates, and several residential developments in Llevant.

Municipal services worked throughout the night to remove fallen trees and clear drains, but some residents in Monnars, l'Escorpí and Rodolat del Moro remain without electricity after a tree fell onto power lines. No injuries have been reported.

The storm also affected several campsites in the city, with some families temporarily relocated within the sites. In one incident, a tree fell onto a tent without injuring anyone. In another, lightning struck and burned a palm tree.

Transport disruption

Rail services were temporarily suspended on several lines between Tarragona, Reus, Cambrils and other nearby towns after tracks were flooded.

Several roads were also affected by fallen trees and accumulated water.

The Municipal Transport Company (EMT) continues to operate four bus routes with temporary changes: the L22, L11, L12, and L13.

The Francolí bridge reopened to traffic at 3:42am.

"Ensuring people's safety"

Tarragona Mayor Rubén Viñuales stressed that despite the intensity of the storm and the numerous incidents, there had been no injuries.

Viñuales said the city's priority throughout the storm had been to "ensure people's safety, respond to incidents and restore normality as soon as possible."
