Susan Sarandon hailed Spain's support for Gaza on Friday, growing emotional as she told reporters in Barcelona that "it makes you feel less alone and that there is hope."

The actress also criticized the film industry's attitude to US politics.

"I think it's a myth that Hollywood is left," she said, saying the silence on US President Donald Trump's policies were "very dangerous."

Speaking at a press conference a day before receiving the 2026 Goya International Award, Sarandon argued that "all films and all stories are political" because they either reinforce or challenge the status quo.

"Every film tells you who to root for, what is funny, what it means to be a woman, what it means to be a man, and what your system of justice is," she said.

On Palestine, she said, "I am an artist for peace and justice and I am against killing children everywhere," and described the "annihilation" of Palestinians as "a horrible crime."

Sarandon also revealed that she was fired by her agency in November 2025 for speaking out about Gaza.

"It became impossible even to appear on television" or work on major Hollywood films. She has since worked in England and Italy.

The actress met with Catalan President Salvador Illa during her visit to the El Born site of the Barcelona History Museum.

The Spanish Film Academy has praised Sarandon's career as "the perfect combination of talent and professional success, glamour, and social and political commitment."

She has starred in films including Thelma & Louise, The Witches of Eastwick, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and Dead Man Walking, for which she won an Oscar.
