Spain's Ministry of Social Rights, Consumption and Agenda 2030 will draw up regulations to ban the sale of energy drinks to under-16s.

Such a ban could be extended to under-18s for drinks that contain more than 32 mg of caffeine per 100 ml.

The move was announced by Minister Pablo Bustinduy in Barcelona before meeting with representatives of the Gasol Foundation, an organization that combats childhood obesity with health promotion programs.

The minister noted that this measure has broad social support, as a survey conducted by the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition indicates that 9 out of 10 people agree with this ban.

The same barometer shows that 25% of those surveyed consume these drinks, and do so twice a week on average.

This future regulation will be added to the ban on the sale of energy drinks in schools that the ministry promoted last year.

Bustinduy recalled that in parallel, the ministry will launch a regulation on the advertising of unhealthy foods aimed at minors.
