Seven-in-ten Catalan weather stations recorded tropical nights in June, a record since 2003
72% saw monthly peaks above 35ºC, while almost one-in-dfive soared above 40ºC

It was a hot June in Catalonia.
The month saw more weather stations record tropical nights than any other June of the last two decades.
In 128 of the 184 measurement points of the Meteorological Service of Catalonia, thermometers did not fall below 20ºC on at least one night in June, meaning there was at least one tropical night in those stations over the month.
This number represents 69.5% of the total number of stations, a figure only surpassed this century by 2003, with 77%.
In addition, in seven out of ten weather stations, thermometers surpassed 35ºC at some point during the month, while in 17%, the 40ºC barrier was passed.
The highest temperature of any month in June was recorded in six stations, all of them in the western Ponent or southern Ebre regions.
The Raval district of Barcelona saw most tropical nights, when 23 out of 30 nights saw temperatures never dipping below 20ºC. This wasn't quite as hellish as last year, however, when all nights were tropical.
In some cases, nighttime temperatures didn't fall below 25ºC on certain nights, meaning the nights were torrid.
In Raval, this happened on nine nights, two fewer than last year, but more than any other year since the weather station was opened in 2006.
Maximums of 43ºC
Six different weather stations broke all sorts of temperatures records in June.
The 43ºC in Vilanova de Segrià on June 22, in the midst of a heatwave, was the highest seen last month, and was less than one degree off the absolute maximum recorded in any month of June.
As well as Vilanova de Segrià, the Algerri (41.7ºC), Poal (41.7ºC), Vallfogona de Balaguer (41.2ºC), Aldea (36.6ºC), and Alfacs (34.7ºC) stations saw their highest ever temperatures in a month of June.
Overall, 32 of the 184 stations exceeded highs of 40ºC at some point in the month, 17% of the total.
