Rapes rise 22% in Catalonia in first half of 2025 while murders drop 45%

Sexual assaults with penetration increased by 22% in Catalonia in the first half of 2025 compared to the same period last year.

According to crime data released by Spain's interior ministry, reported rapes rose from 741 to 904 cases.

Overall, crimes against sexual freedom, which include rapes and other related offenses, increased by 16% during the same period.

In contrast, murders fell sharply, dropping from 44 last year to 24 this year, a decrease of 45%.

Robberies involving violence in homes and businesses also declined by nearly 16%, while petty theft fell by 2%.

Crimes linked to drug trafficking, however, rose by 8.4%, climbing from 2,450 to 2,657 cases.

Looking at the total number of offenses, overall crime fell by 4.5%, amounting to 243,582 cases.

Of these, more than 207,000 were conventional crimes, while cybercrimes accounted for around 36,000.
