A new platform offering guidance and training on how to demonstrate peacefully and avoid violent incidents during protests was presented on Wednesday.

En peu de pau (On a peace footing) brings together groups and organizations aiming to consolidate the peaceful demonstrations that have taken place in Catalonia recently during the political crisis between governments in Madrid and Barcelona.

The platform will use its website and social media to publish information and instructions to help ensure that the public protests arising out of the Catalan self-determination process take place without violent incident.

All the groups in En peu de pau have participated in or organized demonstrations or support pacifist causes. They include the likes of Centre UNESCO, the Catalan National Assembly, Òmnium Cultural, the CIEMEN ethnic minorities association, and the Committees of Defense of the Referendum.

  • “We provide immediate and preventative information for the public through different channels, with recommendations, the debunking of rumours and the detoxification of information”

A founder and group spokesman, Rubén Wagensberg, said that En peu de pau aims to act as a “coordinating body” for all those organizations interested in maintaining the peaceful character of demonstrations in Catalonia.

“We provide immediate and preventative information for the public through different channels, with recommendations, the debunking of rumours and the detoxification of information,” said Wagensberg.

Workshops to train instructors

The new platform also said it was organizing workshops to “train instructors” and thus prepare people to further instruct others in the ways of non-violent protest and political action.

Activist and former CUP party MP, David Fernández, pointed out at the presentation that En peu de pau has been set up to “show the value of what has happened –the peaceful nature of the demonstrations- to spread it, maintain it and create an operation that guarantees it continues.”
