The international community in Catalonia has been growing steadily in recent years.

According to the latest population data from the National Statistics Institute (INE), nearly half of residents aged 25 to 39 were born outside of Spain.

Specifically, 46.9% of people in this age group are foreign-born as of October 1. This amounts to 724,631 individuals in this bracket.

Across all ages, foreign-born residents now exceed 2.1 million, representing nearly 26% of Catalonia’s total population. Over the past six years, this share has grown from 19% to 25.8%.

A similar trend is observed among children aged 5 to 14: the number of those born abroad has nearly doubled, now accounting for around 15% of this age group.

Catalonia’s total population currently stands at 8,186,259, a 1.2% increase compared to last year.

The ageing of the population is also evident. Nearly 20% of residents are now 65 or older, a proportion never reached since records began; four decades ago, this age group represented just 11% of the total population.

Meanwhile, those under 15 years old have fallen below 13% for the first time, continuing a long-term declining trend in younger age groups.
