A group of people with their faces covered by bandanas removed various Catalan independence flags in the northern town of Verges, threatening two residents with a large knife.

According to the councillor for People and Youth Services, Sussagna RIbas, the events took place around midnight on Tuesday. Six or seven people began to remove flags from the street.

A group of neighbours alerted by a witness went up to them and asked them to stop. This, according to Ribas, is when tensions rose. One member of the group took out a knife, holding it up to the stomach of two residents.

The man managed to flee with another member of the group, but the neighbours managed to get hold of the knife, which they have handed in to the police.

When the Catalan police, the Mossos d’Esquadra arrived, they identified those involved in the incident.

Ribas stated that they are the same who  took part in a similar incident some days ago.
