March to call for release of pro-independence leaders on Saturday
Demonstration motto: “Free Jordi Sánchez. Free Jordi Cuixart. In defense of rights and liberties”
Catalan organizations call people to demonstrate in Barcelona on Saturday for the release of the imprisoned pro-independence leaders. The motto of the mobilization will be “Free Jordi Sánchez. Free Jordi Cuixart. In defense of rights and liberties.”
The march, organized by civil society groups under the umbrella group Platform for Democracy, will start at 5pm at the intersection of Passeig de Gràcia and Aragó, and then move towards Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes.
"Who could have told us that we would be calling this demonstration? It would be unthinkable in a democratic country"
Jordi Giró · Platform for Democracy spokesperson
Organizers are appealing for the participation of citizens regardless of their political views and regardless of their view on Catalan independence. “This is a call to all citizens, with no distinctions, in defense of liberty,” said Jordi Giró, Platform for Democracy spokesperson.
The ongoing political crisis between the governments in Barcelona and Madrid could eventually affect the mobilization and its demands, but organizers insist that the current goal of the march is to call for the release of the imprisoned Catalan leaders.
Forced to protest
“Who could have told us that we would be calling this demonstration? It would be unthinkable in a democratic country. It would be incredible,” said Giró. “They force us to take to the streets.”
