Susi, the oldest elephant at the Barcelona Zoo, died on Friday.

Experts do not know her exact birthdate, but it is estimated that she was over 55 years old, well above the average of 39 years for female elephants.

Based on reports, she was one of the oldest living elephants across Europe.

She arrived at the zoo in September 2002, after being captured in the wild and exhibited at a circus. She was at the Safari Park Vergel, a zoo in Alicante, before being moved to Barcelona.

Susi passed away due to her advanced age. Antoni Alarcon, zoo director, thanked all the "work from zoo caretakers who accompanied her during these years."

"Workers, members, and visitors will proudly remember Susi," he added in a written statement shared on Friday.

The zoo announced that it would remain closed on Friday.
