High avalanche risk as heavy snowfall alert is activated in the Pyrenees
Authorities warn of a "very complicated" situation after heavy snowfall, with road closures and chains mandatory on over 30 routes

Authorities in Catalonia activated on Saturday an alert for heavy snowfall across much of the Pyrenees.
The snow line is expected to drop to around 800 metres above sea level, with accumulations exceeding 10 centimetres in some areas.
Vall d’Aran is the most affected county, although significant impacts are also reported in Pallars Sobirà, Alta Ribagorça and Cerdanya.
Three roads have been closed, and the use of snow chains is mandatory on more than 30 others.
The heavy snowfall will be accompanied by 'torb,' a meteorological phenomenon caused by strong winds lifting snow from the ground, which may lead to severe visibility and mobility problems.
Wind gusts of over 90 kilometres per hour are also expected.
Authorities are urging drivers planning to travel in these areas to exercise extreme caution and to equip their vehicles with snow chains, as well as basic supplies such as a full fuel tank, warm clothing and fully charged mobile phones.
High avalanche risk
Due to the large amount of snow that has fallen in recent hours and is expected to continue falling, firefighters have warned of a high risk of avalanches.
They are anticipating a "very complicated" weekend, as avalanche danger is considered to be "considerably" high.
Sunday is of particular concern, as improved weather conditions could encourage people to head into the mountains with what authorities describe as an "excess of confidence."
Recent snowfall has left up to 50 centimetres at higher elevations, which, combined with strong winds, could trigger natural avalanches.
Firefighters are especially advising those planning mountain activities on Sunday to plan carefully, remain cautious, and carry appropriate equipment, along with food, water and warm clothing.
