Authorities in Catalonia have urged extreme caution as heavy rains hit the region, with forecasts worsening.

On Thursday, central and northern coastal and pre-coastal areas — including Barcelona and Girona — are expected to receive more than 100 litres of rain per square metre in 24 hours.

So far, neither the 112 emergency hotline nor the fire service has reported incidents, but officials are stressing the need to avoid unnecessary travel and to stay clear of flood-prone areas.

Civil Protection deputy head Imma Solé said Thursday’s risk alert has been raised to level 4 out of 6.

“This intensity can bring up to 40 litres in 30 minutes, with very heavy downpours, hail and strong winds,” she warned.

Solé noted the episode will not affect the entire territory, but stressed the importance of staying away from rivers, streams and other areas where water can quickly accumulate.

40 flights cancelled

The first mobility impacts are already being felt. Nearly 40 flights at Barcelona Airport — mostly operated by Spanish carrier Vueling — were cancelled as a precaution.

The cancellations affect both domestic and European routes, including 17 departures and 17 arrivals, mainly scheduled for midday and early afternoon.

Air traffic is operating normally but with difficulties, especially for departures, as increased spacing between flights is causing some delays.

According to Flightradar24, the average delay is 26 minutes for departures and 6 minutes for arrivals.

The situation could worsen as heavy rains continue. Air traffic manager Enaire has issued a weather warning, noting that further restrictions may be implemented throughout the day due to deteriorating conditions.
