The Global Sumud Flotilla destined for Gaza has asked for diplomatic protection from the Spanish government after drones were detected flying above ships off the coast of the Balearic Islands.

Activists were not able to confirm their origin of the drones, but said the incident raises serious concerns over the "safety of a civilian, peaceful and non-violent mission."

They added that the episode is similar to "recent precedents against solidarity flotillas" such as the attack by armed drones on the ship Conscience off Malta in May or the "illegal" boarding of the ship Madleen by Israeli forces in international waters in June, after drones sprayed its crew with an irritating substance.

"We call on the Spanish government to assume political and legal responsibility. It is not enough to announce consular protection in the event ships are boarded. Spain must offer prior diplomatic protection and publicly guarantee the flotilla’s right to free navigation to Gaza," the activists said in a statement.

Difficulties

The mission has run into a number of difficulties in its initial phase. Originally scheduled for Sunday, it departed but had to abort shortly after due to the weather.

The second departure, on Monday night, was successful but five smaller vessels were forced to turn back.

Some boats made a technical stop in the Balearic Islands on Wednesday.

The expedition, which includes Swedish activist Greta Thunberg and former mayor of Barcelona Ada Colau, is forecast to reach Gaza within two weeks.
