Girona (ACN).- The Catalan Minister for Health, Marina Geli, met with the Gambian Minister for Health, Aboubakarr Gaye, this Thursday. The two ministers made an agreement to allow trained Gambian health professionals to do their specialisation training at Girona health centres starting in 2011. The exchange programme will last four months and is intended for doctors, nurses, midwives and other healthcare professionals. The objective of the programme is to offer practical training in Girona health centres. Of the 15,000 Gambians that reside in Catalonia, more than 9,000 live in the province of Girona. For this reason, the Catalan Ministry of Health decided to establish the exchange programme in Girona.

The first participants will arrive at Girona health centres during the first quarter of 2011. The programme will then be evaluated to see if it will continue for another year. The Gambian Consulate will help families find housing for the programme’s participants.
