Firefighters tackle blaze on Barcelona's Montjuïc mountain

Firefighters have stabilized a fire that broke out this afternoon on Barcelona's Montjuïc hill.

According Fire Department officials, the blaze originated on the Carretera de Miramar, near the Ronda Litoral, and spread up a very steep slope toward the castle.

With the help of aerial units, the rapid advance was halted, the castle was protected, and areas such as the cable car were evacuated.

The alert was received around 12:30pm.

When firefighters arrived with ten units, they requested assistance from two government helicopters, as the fire was spreading quickly through a hard-to-reach area of ​​bushland, driven by the sea breeze.

Officials explained there may be homeless people camping in the area, but primarily citizens who go there to walk and exercise.
