Catalonia sees rise in road deaths in 2025 with 144 fatalities
Motorcyclists remain most vulnerable group while AP-7 and N-II rank as deadliest roads

A total of 144 people were killed in crashes on Catalonia's interurban roads in 2025, a 6% increase from the previous year, according to the Catalan Traffic Service (SCT). (Servei Català de Trànsit, SCT).
The deaths occurred in 136 fatal crashes, up from 123 accidents and 136 fatalities in 2024.
Despite the rise, the death toll remains 18% lower than in 2019, the reference year used to measure progress toward road safety targets, when 175 people died in 161 crashes.
Vulnerable road users accounted for 43% of all fatalities: 45 motorcyclists, 12 pedestrians, and five cyclists.
Serious injuries also increased, with 861 people seriously hurt in 2025, compared with 807 the year before.
The AP-7 motorway recorded the highest number of deaths, with 17, followed by the N-II with 11. The C-58 and A-2 saw nine and eight fatalities, respectively.
Motorcyclists represented nearly a third of all victims – 31.25% – although their death toll was one lower than in 2024. Pedestrian deaths, by contrast, rose by two.
Some 63 victims were travelling in passenger cars, 10 in heavy goods vehicles and eight in vans.
Men made up the vast majority of those killed, with 114 male victims compared with 30 women. A similar pattern was seen among the seriously injured, three-quarters of whom were men.
Despite the overall reduction since 2019, the decline falls short of the 20% cut targeted under Catalonia's 2024–2026 Road Safety Plan.
Rise in younger victims
The age group with the highest number of deaths was 55 to 64, with 27 fatalities, unchanged from the previous year.
There was, however, a sharp rise in younger victims.
A total of 51 people under 35 died on Catalonia's interurban roads, 12 more than in 2024 and accounting for 35% of all fatalities.
