Families denying donating organs continue to grow, representing 27.6% last year

Catalonia performed 1,356 organ transplants in 2025, a 0.8% increase compared to 2024's 1,345. Last year's figure is also the second-best ever, according to the end-of-year review by the Catalan organization for organ transplants (OCATT).
The best figure ever reported was 1,393 in 2023. In 2025, most transplants were kidney transplants, representing 945 of the total, an increase of 3.6% compared to 2024. Followed by liver (206), lung (110), heart (68), and pancreatic transplants 27.
Regarding donors, there were 370 bodies, a 2.9% drop from the previous year, and 1.8% more living donors, totalling 174.
However, the OCATT warned that more families are denying donating organs, increasing to 27.6%. Although thanked those donors "for doing such an important gesture during such a difficult time as the death of a loved one," Pilar Otermin, deputy director of the Catalan health service, said.
Jaume Tort, director of OCATT, said that Catalonia can be "very proud of these results," as the territory is a "role model worldwide."
