Police separate neo-Nazis and anti-fascist counter-demonstrators in Barcelona

The Catalan Mossos d'Esquadra police have separated a group of anti-fascist counter-demonstrators from a neo-Nazi gathering organized by Núcleo Nacional.

At 6pm, around 20 riot vans separated the groups at Plaça Verdaguer in Barcelona, ​​in the heart of the Eixample district.

The anti-fascist demonstration, which was much larger, was blocking Avinguda Diagonal.

Police kettled the far-right demonstrators at the intersection of Carrer Mallorca and Roger de Flor to prevent the two groups from coming into contact. Police kettling involved surrounding a group of demonstrators and preventing them from leaving a certain area.  

There were moments of tension between the anti-fascists and the police, with objects being thrown at the police line.

Chants of "They shall not pass" and "Barcelona will be the grave of fascism" were heard from the counter-demonstrators displaying pro-independence flags.
