Two Barcelona-based photojournalists, Emilio Morenatti and Bernat Armengué, have won the Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Photography, awarded to the Photography Staff of Associated Press.

The recognition was awarded for the "unique and urgent" photos from the first weeks of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, as well as the devastation of Mariupol and the resilience of the Ukrainian people.

The Pulitzers highlighted the work the photographers did "after other news organizations left."

"AP journalists have done courageous and important work in Ukraine throughout the war, and we’re so pleased that it has been honored by the Pulitzer board," AP Senior Vice President and Executive Editor Julie Pace said in a press release.

Morenatti, the agency's head of photography, also won the Pulitzer Prize in 2021.

At the time, he was awarded the Feature Photography prize for his work on how the coronavirus affected the elderly in Barcelona.
