Barcelona is to name a viewpoint after singer Freddie Mercury and soprano Montserrat Caballé, located in a new space between Carrer Castillejos and Plaça de les Glòries.

The Queen frontman and Catalan opera star's names are forever associated with the city after their duet on the song 'Barcelona,' which featured prominently in the city's 1992 Summer Olympics, following Mercury's death in 1991.

In fact, the announcement from Barcelona City Council comes just two days before the singer's anniversary on November 24

Caballé's big break came in 1962 at the city's Liceu theatre when she played Richard Strauss' 'Arabella.' She died in 2018, aged 85, after a stellar career spanning six decades and including performances at the world's top opera houses.

The original manuscript of 'Barcelona' sold in September for €67,000

Former South African president and anti-apartheid campaigner, Nelson Mandela, will also be honored by Barcelona, with a square in the Sant Andreu district named after him.

The city has also approved the creation of a Catalan Photographers Square in the Old Town, in memory of Pere Català Pic and his twin sons Francesc and Pere Català Roca.

In the Horta-Guinardó district, a square will bear the name of Josep Fontana, a historian who was honored with the city's Medalla d'Or (Gold Medal) in 2018.

The city's report also agreed that in El Raval, Carrer Sant Rafael will be renamed Carrer de Maria Casas Mira, after the founding member and president of the Association of Neighbors and Merchants of the Taula del Raval and an activist for the recovery of the neighborhood's history.

Other figures to be honored with streets or squares named after them include writer and politician Joaquim Amat-Piniella, film critic and historian Miquel Porter i Moix, trade unionist Ramon Porqueras.

In total, an additional twelve streets and squares in Barcelona have been named after women.
