Barcelona records unprecedented month of overnight heat

Temperatures in central Barcelona have not fallen below 24°C at any point of the day for a full month, according to data from the Meteocat weather station in the Raval neighborhood.

The monitoring station, which has been operating since October 2006, has never previously recorded a consecutive month above this threshold.

The last time the temperature dipped below 24°C was on the night of June 19, when it fell to 23.6°C.

Since then, temperatures have remained above 24°C, and they have stayed above 26°C since July 15.

Torrid and tropical nights

The data also shows that half of the nights between the start of June and July 19 have been torrid – defined as nights with minimum temperatures above 25°C.

Every night in the Raval since June 13 has been tropical, meaning temperatures have remained above 20°C.

More than half of the days since the beginning of June have seen maximum temperatures exceed 30°C in the Raval, with a peak of 38.3°C recorded on July 8.

That night, during the second heatwave of the summer, the minimum temperature was also the highest of the year, at 28.6°C.

Night-time conditions have not been as extreme in other parts of the city. At Zona Universitària, for example, the highest overnight temperature recorded so far has been 25.6°C, while temperatures there have not fallen below 24°C since July 7.

At the Fabra Observatory, located on the Tibidabo mountain, minimum temperatures are usually lower.

Over the past month, they have remained between 22°C and 24°C on most days.
