Barcelona pays homage to victims of 2017 terror attack on 8th anniversary

Sunday saw the 8th anniversary of the 2017 terror attack that took the lives of 16 people and injured more than 140 others. 

To mark the occasion, Barcelona once again paid tribute to the victims with a vigil on Las Ramblas.

The brief and emotional ceremony, which took place in respectful silence, was held once again this year at the mosaic by Joan Miró, the same place where the van stopped after driving down the centre of the boulevard.

Survivors and family members gathered at this point to remember their loved ones and, after a meaningful minute of silence, they made the traditional floral offering while 'The Song of the Birds' was played.

Political representatives, led by Catalan president Salvador Illa, also did the same in the background.

As in previous years, the institutional tribute, convened by the Barcelona City Council, was a solemn event without speeches, with the families of the victims and survivors taking centre stage.

During the ceremony, around twenty people unfurled banners against Spain.
