More than 250 runners took to the tunnels of Barcelona's L2 metro line in a historic night-time event organized to celebrate the metro's centenary and raise funds for Motor Neurone Disease (MND) research.

The Metro Centenary Night Run saw participants run a 5.2-kilometer round trip between Universitat and Monumental stations in a unique, once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Runners took off from Universitat station at 1:15 am, departing one by one at 20-second intervals. The event was non-competitive, allowing runners to enjoy the underground course at their own pace, with many taking photos and videos along the way.

Xavier Flores, CEO of Barcelona Metropolitan Transport (TMB), highlighted the event's charitable focus, and the company's commitment "not only to mobility but also to issues that matter to the society in which we live."

The initiative was organized by TMB in collaboration with Corredors.cat and Club Atlètic TMB. The 250 lucky runners were selected via a lottery from more than 5,000 applicants, and all participants received a commemorative race t-shirt.

Funds raised through registration and ongoing donations (open until November 30 via the Migranodearena crowdfunding platform) will go directly to MND/ALS research at Hospital del Mar's Institute of Biomedical Research.
