Staff of the baggage handling company Groundforce has called for an indefinite strike at Barcelona's El Prat airport starting on August 4.

The strike is to denounce the "serious deterioration in risk prevention and occupational health conditions."

Groundforce Barcelona is the company responsible for serving airlines such as Air Europa, Lufthansa, Air France, Qatar Airways and United Airlines, among others.

The strike will affect the ground handling, check-in, passenger boarding and flight coordination staff.

The union says the current work environment is "causing unsustainable workloads and a high turnover of staff that generates an extreme level of physical fatigue, stress and risk of accidents."

This strike comes after "multiple attempts at conversation without a satisfactory response," and company representatives say “the strike is the only way to demand a safe and dignified working environment."
