Around 500 people, according to the Barcelona local police, gathered in Plaça Sant Jaume in Barcelona to protest against the amnesty law on Sunday.

Under the slogan 'No to amnesty, no to impunity', the gathered protesters displayed Spanish flags and banners against the proposed law and Catalan independence.

At the same time, there were strong words against the leader of the Spanish government, Socialist Pedro Sánchez.

The protesters labeled the Prime Minister a "traitorous rat and separatist," and believe that a potential amnesty will not serve to improve coexistence in Catalonia.

Instead, the demonstrators predicted that when former Catalan president Carles Puigdemont returns to Catalonia, "he will commit crimes again." Thus, they call on Socailist MPs to vote against their own party's line and against the amnesty law on Thursday.

Members of far-right Vox, right-wing People's Party, and liberal Ciudadanos joined the rally.

The protest was organized by entities such as Catalunya suma per Espanya, Convivència Cívica Catalana, the S'ha Acabat platform, Parlem Espanyol, and Somatemps.
