The PSC will facilitate Mas' investiture tomorrow

Artur Mas will become the 129th Catalan President tomorrow. The Catalan Socialist Party (PSC) will facilitate the investiture of the leader of the Centre-Right Catalan Nationalist Coalition (CiU). PSC and CiU agreed that the Socialist would participate in the negotiations between Catalonia and Spain. The agreement would also involve the new Catalan Electoral Law.

Barcelona (ACN).- Artur Mas cannot be elected with CiU’s votes alone. He needs the explicit support or at least the abstention of other MPs. After loosing the first investiture voting yesterday, tomorrow Mas will face the second voting. CiU has been negotiating mainly with the Conservative Catalan People’s Party (PPC) and the Socialists. Finally, CiU and the PSC reached an agreement. The agreement was negotiated by Mas himself, together with key figures of both political forces, CiU and PSC. The written document has 5 main points and draws some collaboration lines on: the fight against the economic crisis; social, welfare and family policies; institutional relations –including Catalonia-Spain relations–; local and municipal powers; and, transparency and the new electoral law. Therefore, this document draws some red lines to ensure consensus on the main policies and services provided. It also enables the PSC to participate in future negotiations. It is thus a road map, a guarantee to preserve some policies and current agreements and a platform for future agreements.
