London (ACN).- The delegation from the Generalitat in the United Kingdom held on Wednesday night a special event in commemoration of the National Day of Catalonia at the Tate Modern in London, where a major retrospective exhibition of the Catalan painter Joan Miró is currently on display. The works of the artist served as a stage for the celebration of the Day at the institution in London.

The event was a tribute to the National Day of Catalonia which is traditionally celebrated on the 11th of September. It marks the loss of Catalan independence during the war of Spanish Sucession in 1714. The delegate to the United Kingdom, Josep Suàrez, pointed out during his speech that, like the English following the recent riots, Catalans too recovered from hardships such as the one experienced in 1714 with hard work and resilience and will recover from the current economical crisis.

The Miró exhibition opened on the 14th April and will run until the 11th September. It features over 150 works including paintings, drawings, sculptures and prints by the artist. It is the first major exhibition of Miró in London for almost 50 years.

Amongst many internationally acclaimed artists to have originated from Catalonia, Miró’s work held up as an example of Surrealist excellence. His art is deeply personal, often a celebration of his Catalan identity and an exploration of his anti- Franco political ideology. According to the Tate, Miró’s work is particularly captivating as, “behind the engaging innocence of his imagery, lies a profound concern for humanity and a sense of personal and national identity”. As well as being artistically gifted Miró was often praised for his compassionate nature.

The event was attended by twenty international ambassadors, British MPs, Member of the House of Lords, businessmen, journalists and members of the Catalan community in London. In total, the event was attended by over 200 people
