Cinema tickets on Tuesdays will cost €2 for people aged 65 and over.

Spanish prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, announced the initiative on Sunday morning at an election campaign rally in the Castilla-La Mancha region in central Spain.

The measure will be approved at the next cabinet meeting and will involve an investment of €10 million

The Spanish government will work with the sector's main associations, representing more than 90% of screens, to implement the measure.

The sector will have the option to apply the discounted prices on a day other than Tuesday, depending on the wishes and circumstances of local cinemas in each area.

"Social progress"

Sánchez hailed the measure a "new social advance."

"I know that this will bother the right," he said, because "when they governed their executive was about social cuts while with us it is about social progress."

The Spanish PM recalled the difficulties experienced by cinemas during the pandemic and said his government wants to "turn culture into state policy."

'Fiesta del cine'

Sánchez's announcement was made the day before Spain's annual 'Fiesta del Cine' got underway.

The initiative, which runs from Monday, May 15, to Thursday, May 18, aims to attract cinemagoers with tickets priced at €3.50.
