Spain's Ministry of Labor and Social Economy proposes to raise the minimum wage to €1,286 per month from January 1, 2027.

This would be an increase of 5.3% on the current minimum, of 14 annual payments of €1,221.

Salaries in Spain are commonly divided into 14 payments rather than 12, allowing for an 'extra payment' during the summer and at Christmas.

The ministry is preparing a royal decree that it must send to the Council of Ministers for approval.

Yolanda Díaz's department assures that the update "effectively attends to the right to equitable and sufficient remuneration" to promote "a decent standard of living" for working people and their families.

The aim, the ministry points out, is for the minimum interprofessional salary to reach 60% of the average salary, in accordance with the mandate of the European Committee of Social Rights and the European Social Charter.

With the peoposed update, the total minimum annual salary would reach €18,004, distributed in 14 payments.

"The increase in the interprofessional minimum wage contributes to promoting growth and a recovery of sustained, sustainable and inclusive economic activity in compliance with the 2030 Agenda", says the Ministry of Labor in the draft of the royal decree.

If the content of the draft is approved, it will be the largest percentage increase in the minimum wage since 2022, when the increase was 8% compared to the previous year.

At €1,286 per month, the minimum wage would be 74.8% above the €735.90 in 2018.

The most pronounced rise in recent years took place in 2019, of 22.3% from one year to the next.

In the last two years, the increase has been 4.4% in 2025 and 3.1% in 2026, reaching €1,184 and then €1,221, respectively.

Trade unions CCOO and UGT had called for an increase of "at least" 7% next year, while employers had been against this.
