Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez reiterated his criticism on Friday of the military offensive launched by the United States and Israel against Iran.

When asked about US President Donald Trump's recent comments calling Spain a "loser" and "hostile" to NATO, Sánchez said: "I believe that between allied countries it is good to help when you are right and also point out when you are wrong or making a mistake, as is the case. This war in Iran, in my opinion and that of the government, is an extraordinary error that we will pay for."

"I have enormous respect for the presidency of the United States and enormous admiration for US society," he added during a press conference with Portuguese President Luís Montenegro.

"The position of the Spanish government is clear, we have made it known from the start of the war," the prime minister said, adding that the offensive "is outside international law" and is "an extraordinary error."

"The consequences are already being felt in the form of rising oil and gas prices, and we must not forget the victims," he emphasized, recalling the "successive" wars that the Middle East has endured for decades.

According to Sánchez, Spain supports Ukraine and the "Palestinian cause" because both are victims of violations of international law.

"No to war," was Sánchez's simple message on Wednesday as he pushed back against US President Donald Trump's trade threats over Spain's stance on Iran.

On Friday, he said this message was compatible with sending a frigate to protect Cyprus from the spillover of the Middle East conflict.

"With the same determination that leads us to say no to war in Iran, we obviously have the determination to show solidarity and help by giving a hand to a European Union member state that is a victim of this conflict," he said.
