Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is working to convene a summit of progressive leaders to be held in April in Barcelona, as reported by El Periódico and confirmed by sources from the Spanish government.

The Spanish PM's goal is for the summit to take place on April 17 and 18 under the umbrella of the Global Progressive Mobilization, an initiative from the Party of European Socialists (PES) to coordinate progressive responses to the rise of the far right and growing authoritarianism worldwide.

The objective of the meeting is to build a narrative that counters the far-right wave driven by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, in defense of multilateralism, human rights, and international law.

On Thursday, Sánchez announced that his government would not participate in Trump's "Board of Peace."

"It is clear that this board is outside the framework of the United Nations and has not included the Palestinian Authority. The future of Gaza, and of the rest of the West Bank – of all of Palestine – must be decided by the Palestinians themselves," he said.

Alongside Brazilian President Lula da Silva, Colombian President Gustavo Petro, and Uruguayan President Yamandú Orsi, other left-wing leaders from around the world will be invited to take part.

Sánchez would host it as president of Socialist International, an organization gathering socialist parties from around the world.
