One of Catalonia's nursing unions, Infermeres de Catalunya, called off its indefinite strike after reaching an agreement with the Catalan health ministry late Thursday evening.

The union has struck a deal with the department to improve working conditions for healthcare staff.

At the same time, nurses have agreed to drop their demand for a monthly wage supplement of between €400 and €600, which would have brought them in line with A1 salaries until formal reclassification occurred by the Spanish government.

The Catalan health ministry rejected the initial demand, saying that it would cost more than €350m a year.

The union said after the meeting with the Catalan health ministry that the agreement was not ideal, but that it was “a first step.”

The strike started on December 12.
