The dispute in Catalonia requires a politically negotiated solution, said Norwegian MPs in an open letter to the Spanish government published today by the Catalan Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The title of the document is “Democratic values must be respected,” and it’s signed by leaders and members of five different parties of the Norwegian Parliament.

“We wish to convey our deep concern with recent events in Catalonia,” the letter reads. “We underline that we do not take a stance in the question of Catalonian [Catalan] independence, but trust that democratic values and civil rights be upheld.”

The MPs ask for “mutual respect from all parties concerned” and a “willingness to sit together in a concerted and timely way.”

The undersigned come from five different parties: the Centre Party, the Socialist Left Party, the Christian Democratic Party, the Liberal Party and the Green Party. All of them are opposition parties.
